Everyone Needs Emergency Planning
The Civil Contingencies Act has implications for a wide range of organisations well beyond the category 1 and 2 responders it specifically highlights. Voluntary organisations such as the Red Cross, St. John Ambulance and International Rescue Corps, plus retailers and other businesses, need to be prepared for emergencies. "The voluntary organisations are an unofficial third category of responders, but can often find themselves in the front line," says GEM director Sheena McCabe. "It is vital for them to be aware of the implications of the Act and develop plans for working alongside category 1 & 2 responders in major civil emergencies and local incidents." Business continuity has clear implications for shops, offices and other employers, whether in their immediate response to an emergency, recovery or interim continuity. This is not limited to major incidents, but can include the more 'every day' incidents like fire, flood, power cut, computer virus, illness and death of key individuals. "All employers and businesses, large and small, can benefit from the training Global Emergency Management offers. It will not only make them better equipped to deal with an emergency, but could actually save them money in such areas as insurance and mitigating losses in the event of an emergency occurring," adds Sheena. |
